The benefits of social media for business

‘Social Media refers to the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into an interactive dialogue,’ confirms Wikipedia. Why is it useful for business? Let’s take a look:
First of all what do we mean by Social Media? The most used and most known Social Media sites are Twitter, Facebook, Google +, YouTube, Flickr and LinkedIn. The point is these sites are all good for interactive communication in a much more personal way than traditional marketing.
First of all it’s probably good to check out where the audience you are trying to target is ‘meeting’ in the social media community. Twitter is the fastest growing but Facebook, once primarily the domain of a younger audience, now has one of the fastest growing communities of professional business people all asking you to ‘like’ their business page.
LinkedIn is an even more business focused site and good for networking. Like other sites it requires some input i.e. building your profile page, joining groups and starting discussions. The groups are essentially professional forum sites.
Twitter requires you to tweet in no more than 140 characters at a time. This means you have to be concise and get straight to the point – no point in couching your message in anything but what it is.
Social Media probably won’t make you millions overnight but it can build brand recognition and loyalty and increase your visibility. It is all about community; a community of like-minded professionals or consumers who have common ‘likes’. It’s about interactivity, being able to communicate directly with your customers.
As with all marketing you need a plan and social media should be part of your overall digital marketing program. So first identify which social media site your target audience frequent, join up in whichever required way to the specific site and then talk to your audience there. Once you have found your preferred site or sites to promote your business you need to dedicate time to it. Social Media is an on-going procedure; you need to continually engage with your community.
