Social media has taken over the way we communicate. From communication with friends to letting people know about our businesses, social networking is the way forward. But, as with every form of communication, it is important that you know the right social media etiquette. Failing to follow a few simple rules and some basic common sense could land you in hot water.
Social networking has its own form of etiquette and it is important you stick to this to avoid unwanted blunders! So, to help you out here are some social media do’s and don’ts.
Do – introduce yourself when adding a new friend. You wouldn’t do this in real life now would you!
Don’t – talk about yourself and your company all the time. Vary your posts. Ask your audience how they are and what they are doing.
Do – include as much information on your profile as you can. This will make you look more valid and will attract customers to your page.
Don’t – use your Facebook page as purely a promotional pitch.
Do – use a friendly tone when talking to your followers and those that have liked your page. Keep it friendly, keep it real.
Don’t – take ages to respond to people. Social media is for the here and now. Not for something that happened last Tuesday.
Do – follow the competition. It is OK to do so.
Don’t – be too sales like. You will put people off.
Do – share useful and interesting information. Keep it short, but sweet.
Don’t – just use social media because you think you have to. Be wise and use it to your advantage. Your followers will thank you for it.
You see, social networking has its own list of do’s and don’ts. The key is to be interesting, polite and use your common sense. If your posts don’t interest you or make you want to comment then the chances are your followers won’t want to either. But practice makes perfect and there is no time like the present. So get networking.
