August 7, 2012 9:51 am

It is being deemed as the first social media Olympic Games.  And from the moment the opening ceremony began this was clearly apparent.  In the hours running up to the opening ceremony Twitter had already crashed. There were also glitches in wireless connections due to traffic levels from smartphones as everyone headed to their devices to update their social media.

In case you hadn’t noticed, all audience member’s at the opening ceremony had a personalised pixel device which enabled members to create user generated content.  Members were deemed as participants and not spectators as everyone has a part to play in the London 2012 Olympic Games.

As the ceremony went on there were several major references to social media.  The two main characters of the opening ceremony were shown to be on their phones, updating their social media profiles that then appeared on the screen for the world to see.

Later on the presence of Sir Tim Berners-Lee who invented the worldwide web was a representation of the modern day world.  He was seen to be tweeting from his computer. And later the arena lit up via the pixels in the stadium to show his most famous saying ‘This is for everyone’.

It is thought that the majority of social media users will be mainly updating their Facebook pages with Twitter coming in second.

So as a business how can you be harnessing this power?
