Simple shopping with m-commerce

M-commerce, or mobile commerce, is nothing new. It has been around for a long time and has already changed the way consumers purchase. M-commerce is the ability to purchase using a mobile. So if you are yet to invest in a mobile site, now is the time to do so.

But recent reports have shown that having an m-commerce site simply isn’t enough.  You have to really get into the head of your shoppers.  After all, with a competitive market place  a decent m-commerce site is what will separate you from the rest.

Here are a few things you should consider:

They key to a solid m-commerce site is simplicity.  Hard navigation, cluttered pages and too much text can confuse your shoppers.  Remember, people are shopping using the mobile as they want to purchase quickly.

Vertical not horizontal

When you read a text you scroll down, so make your navigation vertical and not horizontal.  That way they will just have to scroll down rather than scroll across. Make it intuitive.

Make sure you include a search function.  Mobile users are often time poor and can be rather impatient.  Did you know that most mobile users won’t wait 5 seconds for your site to load? So give them the option to search for what they are looking for.

The checkout can usually be the most time consuming and the place where you could lose most shoppers.  Make it as simple as possible and limit the fields that are non-essential.

Testing, testing

Remember there is more than one smartphone out there and they all have very different interfaces.  Make sure you test your mobile site on Android, iPhone, Blackberry and Windows Phone 7. Checking all platforms means that you will be able to ensure your site is applicable to everyone.

Don’t forget, 79% of time on mobiles is spent shopping. So don’t be the ones missing out.  Jump on the m-commerce bandwagon now!
