Have the Google updates affected your ranking?

This year Google have implemented two major changes to the search algorithm. The best way to explain this is that Google has it’s unique set of rules that it uses to test your site others, and the better your site complies with these rules, the higher you will rank on Google. Sounds simple right? Well, not really!

Google doesn’t publish its exact algorithm changes, merely recommendations to webmasters that they should implement. Given the changes that we’ve seen to the algorithm this year, we are investing a lot of time into our research and development of this area.

Panda and Penguin update

We don’t know why, but Google decide to call their updates after animals! This year there were two major updates, Panda and Penguin. Penguin was back in February, and although we didn’t see this affect any of our sites, it affected up to 12% of searches and was designed to penalise websites that lacked content or that had a high number of ads compared to the amount of content.

We didn’t have any issues with this update, though we heard reports from other companies that they were penalised on some sites and couldn’t quite figure out why. Our view? The change to the algorithm meant that high quality sites were rewarded for their efforts, therefore sites that were probably well optimised but could improve were knocked off their top spots. The recent changes in the algorithm have enabled new entrants to stake their claim that probably wouldn’t have been able to do so in the past.

The Panda update that came next focused on penalising over-optimised sites, and combating spam factors such as keyword stuffing and paid link schemes where people manipulate their Page Rank by using these black hat techniques. Google said that they wanted to reward high-quality sites, and that they have! We have seen some excellent results recently from our SEO campaigns, and we are working constantly to research the area and make improvements.
