So much exciting stuff happened in the wonderful world of marketing in 2011. Here are just a few of them.
Social media dominates
A report by Experian shows that Facebook accounted for around three per cent of all searches in 2011 – a whopping 46% rise on the previous year. This makes it the most visited website for the second year. Overall social media related terms accounted for 4.18 percent of the top 50 searches.
Britain – a nation of online shoppers
The International Communications Market report found that 79% of British web users had already bought something online, nine out of ten had looked at shopping websites and the average time spent on them in January 2011 was 84 minutes.
The Google+ craze
Google+ grabbed the number two spot on Google’s list of fastest rising searches in 2011 with searches shot up by greater than 10000%!
It’s no surprise that Ofcom reported that there was a huge surge in UK consumers accessing the web via mobile phones and to watch TV. They also found that smartphone ownership doubled in the UK – rising from 24% to 46%. Finally, social networking sites accessed via mobile or PC, were used by 75% of consumers.
Twitter had a makeover
Twitter unveiled a brand new design, giving it more of a Facebook feel. The new layout is based around four tabs – connect, discover, me’ and home. The biggest changes are the more detailed profile page, the ability to see all of activity surrounding a tweet directly below the message (a bit like Facebook comments) and the discover tab where you can search for relevant content based on your interests.
So what the heck will happen in 2012? Well, we don’t have a crystal ball but we do have a few ideas, and of course we’ll share it all with you. It’s exciting times!
